Dangling on their separate deep carmine-colored cords and each sporting its own glass pony bead beneath the two competing crews are the contest's four hand-carved bone skull bead referees. It is their responsibility to declare which team wins the grand prize: an impressive 1 5/8" monkey's fist knot made from mariner's cord accompanied by a mysterious, semi-transparent art-glass ball.
