| PiRATE PRiMiTiVE Mac's Picks Neckpiece #N54 "NATIVE TREASURE" In most tales of "trade beads," the "Europeans" trade the "natives" for gold, land, daughters and other useless goods. This, however, is a neckpiece made from rough clay, certainly not in Venice, or some other "civilized" country where such beads were most often crafted. True, the rough swirls of glass might well be part of an earlier trade and the silky cord could have come from just about anywhere. There is definitely sailor-work in the monkey's fist knots. 'Tis a puzzlement! Our learned theory is that Mac probably made it, but since that lacks romance we'll think again. A pirate was shipwrecked on an almost deserted island. Almost, but not quite. A beautiful young island maiden had been stranded there, too, although not shipwrecked. She was being punished because she dared defy her father by refusing to learn to cook and weave baskets and the like and wanted to be a warror. Worse, she longed to run off with pirates! Now the pirate and the maiden of course hit it off as only such a pair can do. They shared what little was left to them: He a knife, a few loose beads and some cord, she, well, herself. Together they fought and loved and he taught her what he knew and she taught him what she knew. They even made beads from the clay and knotted it on the bit of cord the pirate had carried to the island. But one day, weeks later, a large bamboo-clad vessel was spotted on the horizon. Her father! They knew that if the pirate were seen he would be killed. Distraught, they hid themselves and came to this decision: He would hide until her father had left, keeping the neckpiece to remember her always. And she? Well, although she knew she must return with her father, she carried something of her lover that he had given her beneath the fronds where they had bedded during the tropic rains. Believe it or don't. But do purchase this "Native Treasure" made with non-replaceable vintage clay beads, two-toned sinnet of nylon, three monkey fists and swirled glass beads. It measures about 30" around and may be adjucted by a sliding bead. The drops are about 3 3/4". This bit of historical (hysterical, if you'd rather) romance is yours for only $32. |
