Sheet Music Covers from the "War Between the States"  The Confederacy
Being a collection of vintage song covers gleaned from the Levy Sheet Music Collection. These specific covers were chosen not necessarily for their popularity, but for our interest in the content of the covers. They may or may not be the ones you would choose. If you are interested in the subject you might check out the Levy site. All the covers are downloadable. Many songs we sing and that are well known may not be represented because either they were not in the collection or belong more in the folk catagory, often written by the soldiers on the front and sometimes shared only by word of mouth.  Indeed, many songs were shared by both sides, either because the sentiments were universal or because some intrepid publisher made two versions. "The Soldier's Dream," a piano piece shown here at the top was also published at the same time in the North as "The Soldier's Vision"--same cover and all!  Also, a good tune is catching. There are Northern and Southern Versions of most of the popular songs sung by the soldiers. And then there are parodies and "replies" for popular tunes. Interesting to us that the same year "The Wearing of the Green" was written, "The Wearing of the Grey" came out in the South with both sets of lyrics!
