SIR HENRY’S HUZZAH   March ‘07
Lyrics:  Mallory & McCall (please give credit)
air: Ridin’ a Raid, aka Bonnie Dundee

SPOKEN: Allow me to introduce myself.

SUNG:
1.  I’m Sir Henry Morgan–no pirate was I
And you who accuse me in Hell may you fry!
I sail’d for my country and sacked in her name;
I plundered for England–Yea, that be my fame.

   CHORUS:   Sing out for Sir Henry, the brave buccaneer,
  You’ll find no man like me, no leader my peer.
  Huzzah for my courage, my guile and my blade;
  Huzzah for my genius at leading a raid.

2.  When only a lad I was kidnaped from Wales,
And sold as a slavey–or so go the tales.
But with brains and with cunning I gave them the slip
And soon was a captain of my own fighting ship.

   CHORUS:   Sing out for Sir Henry, so clever, so smart,
  From slavey to captain–a fine way to start!
  Huzzah for my brav’ry, I’ve no need for luck,
  Huzzah for my cunning, my brains and my pluck!

3.  I captured Jamaica and made it our Port
Where privateers gather for fun and for sport.
The fighting men know no one else could compete
So they made me the admiral of the buccaneer fleet.

   CHORUS:   Sing out for Sir Henry, the admiral to fear,
  The Spaniards all hate me, the British all cheer.
  Huzzah for the towns and their treasure I’ve sacked!
  Huzzah for the Spaniards whose skulls I have cracked!

4.  I took Portobello with my own clever tack
I didn’t sail in, I snuck in through the back.
And before they could stop me I’d taken the forts
Such gold and such treasure–such ripe Spanish ports!

   CHORUS:  Sing out for Sir Henry, who knows what to do
  To vanquish a town and collect prizes, too.
  Huzzah for the fellow with might and with stealth.
  Huzzah for Sir Henry, huzzah for my wealth!

5.  I ravaged the total of Panama town,
Before I was done, well, the place had burned down.
I hauled out the loot in a long donkey train;
Fifteen guineas per man was each buccaneers gain.

  CHORUS:  Sing our for Sir Henry and all of my gold
  I spent it on land for a place to grow old.
  Huzzah for the Lord and the Kingdom to come,
  Huzzah for good liquor, good women, good rum!

6.  But when all was done Mother England got mad,
They’d treated with Spain which was really too bad.
I was called back to London, I caused quite a stir.
And after two years King Charles made me a Sir.

CHORUS (twice):  Sing out for Sir Henry–no pirate was I
  And you who accuse me in Hell may you fry.
  Huzzah for my daring I modestly sing!
  Huzzah for this warrior who sacked for his king!

  Sing out for Sir Henry–Jamaica is mine;
  The Brethren love me–we manage just fine.
  Huzzah for myself and the battles I’ve led!
  Huzzah for my friends who’ll get drunk when I’m dead!

TAG: (slower and drawn out)
Yea!  “Huzzah for myself!” rings loud in my head___!
Huzzah for my friends who’ll get drunk when I’m dead!

YET ANOTHER PIRATED SONG!

In our ongoing search for new songs, we have been mining some grand traditional tunes to "piratize."  These words are set to the English ballade "Bonnie Dundee," known by Civil War buffs as "Riding a Raid."

Sir Henry Morgan is indeed correct that technically he was not a pirate, although he did everything he could to act like one.  History tells of a brutal but cunning raider who finished his career with flags flying.  His life ended in a drunken haze, and we feel, from our studies, that he must have been a screaming egotist as well.  So, if in this song Sir Henry takes full credit for everything, well, that's the man we found.

Hopefully, you will enjoy the old reprobate and sing his song!

If you are a lyricist who has written some songs that belong on this page, please get in touch and we will post them.  Public domain or original music only, please!

And don't forget, you can hear Mallory sing this at your next function.  To hire Mallory & McCall, and or the Skeleton Crew Pirate Band, email us!

Have fun with ol' Sir Henry and let us know what you think of him!

Cheers,
