Popular in the US by 1838
This collection is American, so any "Irish" music we find in our searches will have been published here, either pirated or written, like some of the later songs, in the US as popular songs.  Very little "traditional" music made it into the Levy Sheet Music collection--probably because it wasn't originally written down, having been passed along by the infamous Oral Tradition.  An example here seems to be  "Rosin the Beau" (Bow) which is claimed by both Ireland and the US.  Where ever it started, it quickly became a popular tune for Civil War songs and other examples of pure Americana.

LEVY SHEET MUSIC collection for an absorbing look at a most remarkable use of the web.  It's hard for us to stay away!  It's all free, too.
