| Some songs are remarkably easy to transform into suitably piratical form. This Scottish tune has been taken up by the Irish and now the Pirates. The original lyrics can be found in our Mel Bay Presents Mallory & McCall's Irish Pub Songbook. Check it out on the web. And listen to The Skeleton Crew Pirate Band perform it at their next lootin', pillagin' and singin' If you have an adaptation of a public domain song you'd like to post here (sheet music and/or lyrics) get in touch. | A NOTE ABOUT SMELLING__ER, THAT'S SPELLING WHISKY/WHISKEY. According to our ancient dictionary, Whiskey is that stuff made in America. Thus our pirate here is singin' of the Irish stuff, most likely poteen (pronounced "pwa-cheen"--home grown) or creatur--"crey-tur"), whisky as "creature." Not grog, (which if often rum and water) yet, as he's on his way out. Whatever, it's sure to be uisce beatha (pronounced, as with most Irish, exactly like it looks: "whiska baha") from which the English word comes. It means, in Irish, "the water of life." |
